... Monthly weather summary for August for Fairbanks Alaska...

August 2014 was warm and wet in Fairbanks and helped push the
Summer season rainfall totals to a new record in Fairbanks.

The average high temperature at the Fairbanks Airport was 68.9
degrees which was 3.0 degrees above the normal high temperature
of 65.9 degrees. The average low temperature was 49.3 degrees
which was 2.9 degrees above the average low temperature of 46.4
degrees. The average temperature for the month of August was 59.1
degrees which was 3.0 degrees above the normal of 56.1 degrees.
August was the only month of the Summer season from 1 June to 31
August to rank above normal. August ranked as the 15th warmest of
108 year of record.

The warmest temperature recorded at the Fairbanks International
Airport for August 2014 was 80 degrees which occurred on the
11th. This was only the 4th 80 degree or warmer day to occur in
Fairbanks during the Summer season. This is a marked difference
from last year when 36 days of 80 degrees or warmer occurred
during the Summer season. The average number of 80 degree days
for a Summer season in Fairbanks is 11.

The lowest temperature recorded at the Fairbanks International
Airport for August 2014 was 33 degrees which occurred on the
30th. A cold airmass moved into the area during the last two days
of the month prompting frost advisories for the Fairbanks
area. Although the Airport did not fall to freezing or below many
outlying areas dropped into the lower to mid 20s on the last two
mornings of the month.

2.29 inches of rain fell at the Fairbanks Airport during the month
of August which was 0.41 inches above the normal August rainfall
of 1.88 inches. This was the third month of above normal rainfall
in the Fairbanks area. Although August 2014 only ranked as the 33
wettest of 108 years of record... combined with June and July the
Summer of 2014 ranked as the wettest on record with an incredible
11.62 inches of rain falling at the Fairbanks Airport. This is
215 percent of the normal Summer rainfall of 5.40 inches.

Normal annual precipitation for Fairbanks is 10.82 inches. As of
the 2nd of September 14.96 inches of precip has fallen at
Fairbanks in 2014. This year to date total already ranks as the
11th wettest annual precip total January 1st to December 31st on
record. The greatest annual total precip that has fallen in
Fairbanks is 18.52 inches which occurred in 1990.

Looking forward to September... possible sunshine continues to
decrease by 6 and a half minutes per day with day light hours
decreasing from 14 hours and 37 minutes on the 1st to 11 hours and
24 minutes on the 30th. The average daily high temperature
decreases from 60.5 degrees on the 1st to 46.2 degrees on the
30th. The average daily low temperature decreases from 41.3
degrees on the 1st to 30.1 degrees on the 30th. Average rainfall
is 1.1 inches and average snowfall in September in Fairbanks is
1.8 inches.

September can be a month of extremes. The warmest temperature on
record for September in Fairbanks is 84 degrees and occurred in
1957. The coldest temperature on record for September in Fairbanks
is 3 above and occurred in 1992. Measurable snowfall has been
observed in September on about 2 out of every 3 years. Heavy snow
events are infrequent but are not unheard of in September. Long
time residents will recall 1992 when over two feet of snow fell
during a ten day period.

The forecast for September from the climate prediction center
calls for increased chances of above normal temperatures and equal
chances for below normal... near normal or above normal precipitation.
