Excessive Heat Warning

Statement as of 11:19 AM CDT on July 22, 2017

Expires 9:00 PM EDT on July 22, 2017

... Excessive heat warning remains in effect until 8 PM CDT this
evening...

* heat index values... 100 to 110 degrees due to temperatures in
the upper 80s to mid 90s... and dewpoints in the mid 70s.

* Timing... through this evening.

* Impacts... increased risk for heat exhaustion or heat stroke
for people spending time outside or living without air
conditioning. Children and the elderly are most susceptible.
Also, parked vehicles will become dangerously hot within
minutes.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of
dangerously hot temperatures and high humidity will occur. This
combination will lead to a dangerous situation in which heat
illnesses are likely. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-
conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check on relatives and
neighbors, especially the elderly.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when
possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work the occupational safety and
health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by
heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke
is an emergency, call 9 1 1.

Special Statement

Statement as of 5:09 PM CDT on July 22, 2017

Expires 8:15 PM EDT on July 22, 2017

... Thunderstorms developing with risk of heavy rain along and
south of a Memphis Missouri to Keokuk Iowa to Macomb axis...

At 5 PM CDT... an area of developing thunderstorms will move slowly
east southeast. High water levels will result in localized torrential
rains with rainfall rates at or above 2 inches an hour for brief periods
of time. This may result in minor water issue of ponding in low lying
locations with highest rain totals mostly below an inch. The strongest
storms could also produce wind gusts around 40 mph and maybe small
hail. Motorists should be prepared for reduced visibility in heavy
rain. Do not drive through water, or around barricades.
