... Wind Advisory remains in effect from 6 am this morning to 9 PM
CST this evening...

* timing... gusty southerly winds will occur ahead of a cold front
this morning. In the wake of the cold frontal passage, even
stronger northwest winds will occur this afternoon and early
this evening.

* Winds... peak wind gusts will be 40 to 45 mph, mainly from mid
afternoon into the early evening hours.

* Impacts... minor damage is possible along with more difficult
driving conditions.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Wind Advisory is issued when sustained winds are expected to
reach 30 mph or greater for longer than one hour... or wind gusts
are expected to reach 40 mph for any duration.

Statement as of 10:45 AM CST on November 18, 2017

... Winds 40 mph to locally 45 mph expected through 2 PM CST...

A band of winds, with gusts of 40 to 45 mph, and possibly up to 50
mph is expected to develop and work southward into parts of
southeast Illinois and southwest Indiana from late morning into
the early afternoon hours.

South to southwest winds 20 to 30 mph, with gusts 40 to 45 mph are
expected to work southward toward Interstate 64 from Wayne City
Illinois to Lynnville Indiana shortly after 11 am today. The winds
will expand southward toward McLeansboro Illinois, Mount Vernon
and Evansville Indiana by 1 PM.

These winds will be ahead of a line of showers and thunderstorms
that are expected to develop in the area between 1 PM and 2 PM
CST. The winds ahead of these storms will likely be sustained in
excess of 45 mph or even higher.

If you have any loose outdoor objects that may cause damage, bring
them indoors. Travelers driving high profile vehicles will likely
experience some difficulty in controlling their vehicle due to
high winds.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued by the National
Weather Service for the entire quad state area . This watch number
516 is in effect until 5 PM CST . The following safety tips are
being provided in the hope that the broadcast media will
frequently broadcast these messages while the watch affects their
area. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable
for the development of severe thunderstorms in and close to the
watch area. If you are in the watch area, keep up to date of the
latest weather information. These storms can develop rapidly, so
there may be occasions when advance warning is not possible.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning means a severe thunderstorm has been
observed or indicated by radar. If you are in the path of or near
a storm, take immediate actions to protect life and properly.
Follow these safety rules:

In open country, you should seek shelter and avoid tall trees
which be targets for lightning. If there is no shelter, go to a
ditch or culvert, but be aware of rising water which can cause
flooding.

When indoors, stay away from outside walls and windows and go to
an interior room on the lowest level. Avoid using electrical
appliances while the storm is nearby.

In Mobile homes, you should leave and seek nearby safe shelter.

If swimming or on a boat, you should get to shore as quickly as
possible and find shelter.

A thunderstorm is considered severe when it contains one inch or
larger diameter size hail and/or wind gusts of 58 miles an hour or
greater. A severe thunderstorm also produces deadly lightning and
very heavy rain which can lead to flash flooding.

Remember, with any severe thunderstorm, there is always the
