Special Statement, Air Quality Alert

Statement as of 6:48 AM EDT on May 28, 2016

Expires 11:00 PM EDT on May 28, 2016

... Early season heat expected to continue today across lower
elevations of east central New York and adjacent western New
England...

A hot and humid air mass will be in place across east central New
York and adjacent western New England today. Heat indices are
expected to reach the mid 90s in valley areas.

Although heat indices are expected to remain below 100 degrees... this
sudden change to hot and humid weather is particularly hazardous... as
our bodies have not had much time to acclimate to the heat just
yet.

Be extra cautious if remaining outdoors this weekend during the
daytime... especially if engaging in strenuous physical activity or
participating in outdoor sports. Make sure to remain well
hydrated... and take breaks. Try to limit sun exposure. Know the
signs of heat related illness.

Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle... even with the
windows down. Always make sure all children have left the car when
you reach your destination. Remember... beat the heat... look before
you lock and check the back seat!

The New York state department of environmental conservation has
issued an air quality health advisory for the following counties...

Dutchess... Ulster... Columbia... Greene... Schoharie... Albany...
Rensselaer... Saratoga... Schenectady... Washington... Fulton...
Montgomery.

Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an
air quality index value of 100 for the pollutant of ozone. The air
quality index... or aqi... was created as an easy way to correlate
levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the aqi
value... the greater the health concern.

When pollution levels are elevated... the New York state department of
health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor
physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People
who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels
of pollutants include the very Young... and those with pre
existing respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease.
Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal
physician.

A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York
residents can stay informed on the air quality situation.
The toll free number is: 1 800 5 3 5, 1 3 4 5.
