Special Statement

Statement as of 4:55 AM EDT on May 05, 2016

Expires 8:00 PM EDT on May 05, 2016

... Wintry-like conditions are expected across the higher
elevations of the east Tennessee mountains today...

Another surge of cold air moves in today as the center of an upper
level low moves down across the area. This low pressure center
will bring another round of precipitation into the region.

Temperatures will be cold enough across the highest elevations... generally
at or above 4500 feet... for snow showers. Snow accumulation up to
one inch is possible by mid to late afternoon at and above 5000
feet. Snow tapers off by late afternoon as the center of the low
exits to our southeast into the Carolinas.

Areas most at risk of seeing snow accumulations will be across the
highest elevations of the Great Smoky Mountains. Anyone venturing
across the higher elevations... such as hikers or persons traveling
across Highway 441... should be prepared for wintry-like conditions
beginning late this morning... and lasting into the mid-to-late
afternoon hours.

Area hikers and outdoorsmen should also be aware that even at
elevations down to 3000 feet... temperatures will be in the mid to
upper 30s with a cold rain falling. These conditions could
potentially lead to hypothermia if unprepared.

Please stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio and other local media for
further details and updates.
